Olga Wing (formerly Olga Miller) is a third-generation artist who spent her childhood learning her craft in her father's and grandfather's studios in Sea Cliff, N.Y. There she worked in a variety of media - oil paints, watercolors, pastels, sculpting in clay, as well as woodworking in her dad's workshop. Her family moved to Richmond, Maine and she attended UMA where she received much of her formal art training. Between working at various jobs and raising a family she managed to work on art projects for friends . Eventually she moved to Byron, where she fell in love with the mountains, woods and lakes which make up much of the Western Maine countryside. Olga also enjoys the sporting life - which inspires much of her work, including wildlife, birds, and animals of any kind. She's an accomplished hunter and fisherman, and loved horseback riding for many years. Horses always were one of her favorite subjects. She won many awards for her wildlife art, including entries in the Maine Sportsman's Show art competition and the Maine Migratory Waterfowl Stamp contest, which she received first place for her design of Harlequin Ducks, the species chosen for 2010. Olga still works with various media and surfaces, including oil on canvas, acrylics and pencil. The woods surrounding her home help provide lots of materials to work on. Two of her favorites are tree mushrooms, and moose antlers provided by neighbors . She also paints on slate, barn boards, sawblades, etc. She's done many commissioned portraits, paying close attention to detail and accuracy. She's been a member of the Pennacook Art Center group since 2004, and exhibits at various shows throughout Maine when not busy in her studios in Byron andPeru. "I see each piece of work as a project with an idea, beginning, progression often with tweaks and changes, and finally an ending when I feel, it can't get any better. Then I always stand back and self - critique the piece for a while before finally sending it to a client or having it ready to display. I invite opinions of friends, family and other artists - there's always something new or different I can learn from one project to improve on my next one. I think if the completed piece consistently draws your eye, and evokes some kind of feeling - a happy memory, or a yearning - then it's a success. Whether I'm totally pleased with the project or not (sometimes not!) , there's another one to work on around the corner, with its own set of challenges and rewards". |
