Artist - Melanie Farmer

MELANIE FARMER is a Maine native who grew up on a small family farm in a little border town surrounded by a beautiful setting of mountains, hills and lakes and streams. At a very early age she was drawing and painting, receiving encouragement from her grandmother, her mother and a very influential, challenging teacher in a two-room school.

In her early adult years, Melanie lived many places from coast to coast but returned to live in Maine where she finds beauty and peace and paints what she sees around her. Although she has studied with some well-known artists, Melanie is primarily self-taught and has experimented with various mediums, however her focus for this show is in oils.

At home, she doesn’t have to travel far to find a magnificent, looming mountain or a tucked-away waterfall or old barn to paint; an old working farm along the river with fields of hay or grazing cows and horses; or perhaps a small pond or lake with reflections of a sunrise, loons and early kayakers.

Nearly every summer Melanie travels down-east to paint with artist friends and loves to paint the coast of Maine with its lighthouses, crashing ocean waves, craggy coves, sandy beaches and striking displays of fields filled with fireweed.

Melanie retired last year after twenty years of owning and operating a successful frame shop/gallery business in Farmington, allowing more time for capturing the magnificent people, places and things of Maine, to record them with her brush on canvas for many to behold long after the landscape changes. One of her better known works is an historic mural on the interior wall of the Franklin Savings Bank in Farmington, completed in 1989.
