“Artist of the Month” Mary McFarland of Farmington will be feted at an Open House Reception on Friday, May 4 from 4:00 – 7:00 PM. The public is invite. Refreshments will be served.

Mary tells her story… “I have loved fabric for as far back as I can remember… the textures and flexibility, the colors and patterns. It seems there is always something new to try with this medium, from clothing design to fabric art and functional items.

I opened my own clothing shop in Mount Vernon, Maine in 1977 with the last three years in Farmington, Maine. After I closed the doors in August 2000, I continued making custom clothing but focused more on “Fabric Art”. One of he larger of these pieces was created for the chapel at Farmington Memorial Hospital in 2005 and is still enjoyed by many people.

After all these years many pieces of clothing and fabric art have found their way into homes and public places throughout the State, across the country and abroad.

Working with fabric continues to engage me as I keep exploring and trying new techniques. And yet, I also feel the pull to revisit ongoing series from past years as though they are stories that haven’t been finished and there is still more to say. I have been finding half-finished projects hidden away in the studio that seem worthy of completion and a fresh take.

I am inspired by nature in all its’ glory, vivid dreams and an active visual imagination.

This display covers a wide range… old, new and resurrected, subtle to vibrant, sheer to rich with texture, my love of thread, fabric and the creative process woven throughout.”
